History Local history of the surrounding area places Luckington Court on the site of a manor owned by King Harold II before 1066 who was killed that year in the Battle of Hastings. Built in local creamy Cotswold stone, Luckington Court was first extended and remodelled in the 16th Century or earlier by the Fitzherbert family, who had purchased in 1632 and continued to own until the early 1800's. There were further additions including the service wing to the north by the Johnson-Ferguson family in 1921. Lt-Col Trevor Horn and his family purchased Luckington Court in 1947; he was renowned in the area for being the first director of the world's most prestigious three day event, Badminton Horse Trials and remained at the helm until 1956. It has remained in the Horn family to this day. The property saw extensive renovations in 2003 which were conducted in a compassionate way to both improve and modernise the Estate. In 1995, Luckington Court had both the exteriors and interiors used to showcase Longbourn, the Bennet family home, in the BBC's TV series Pride and Prejudice, which starred Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. LUCKINGTON COURT Luckington Court is a Grade II* Listed, Cotswold stone, detached dwelling house which was first extended and refashioned in a 16th Century style with original Tudor features at the rear including the stone mullioned windows. Thought to have been the site of the home of the Saxon King Ine (Ina) as far back as 688-728 AD, Everleigh boasts some impressive royal connections over later centuries too, being owned by the crown during the reigns of Henry VI, Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. Mary Queen of Scots is said to have visited in secret whilst under house arrest at Tutbury Castle, under the care of Sir Ralph Sadleir. Sir Ralph, a prominent Tudor courtier and chief falconer was granted the house by Elizabeth I. He was proclaimed to be the 'wealthiest commoner in England' when he died in 1587. Sir John Astley acquired Everleigh Manor in 1764 and the Astley family resided there until the mid-19th century. The Palladian buildings in place today are Georgian, dated to around 1770, with some of the earlier structures thought to have been incorporated. A fire in 1881 destroyed much of the interiors and there was substantial rebuilding work carried out in 1882. Requisitioned by the army in 1939, Everleigh was initially in use as a hospital and latterly as a centre for producing vaccines for troops. It passed back into private ownership in the 1990s, and was acquired by the current owners in 1999, who undertook a total renovation.LocationThe village of Everleigh lies in some of the UK's most delightful countryside. The wide, open spaces of Salisbury Plain are close at hand, and offer numerous sporting opportunities. Chalcot House is the ideal country house. An architectural delight providing appealing accommodation in terms of size, appointment and proportion, which overlooks its Park. The parkland is bordered by mature woodland ensuring privacy whilst the approach is over a long drive, which offers occasional glimpses of the stunning facade. The exquisite south front (facade) holds instant appeal. Described in Nikolaus Pevsner The Buildings of Britain (Wiltshire edition) as 'unusually animated' , which must refer to the rare combination of Doric, Ionic and Corinithian pilasters flanking the large sash windows. These in turn are capped by triangular or segmental pediments, which combine with the central front door and its semi- circular niche and urn above to provide a pleasing symmetry. This is further enhanced by the use of Flemish bond brick elevations with Ashlar stone dressings which are immediately bordered by lawns, without the need for floral or shrub colour or embellishment. Dating from the late 17th century, today's house incorporates an earlier dwelling. The drive leads to an enclosed gravel forecourt on the north front of the house. A turning circle fronts the porch, with the Cottage and garages to the east and the pool house and a brick wall to the west providing enclosure. The half-octagonal porch makes a most welcoming entrance and displays the heraldic arms of the Phipps family above the front door. The porch opens into the vestibule, which in turn has a pair of half-glazed doors, which lead into the central stair hall. The stair hall is the hub of the ground floor accommodation, from which all of the ground floor rooms can be accessed. The stone floor and staircase are complimented by the ornate iron balustrade and fine oak doors and architraves. The elegant drawing room and dining room stand to either side of the stair hall. The drawing room is west facing, overlooking the garden and benefits from full height windows including a central bay window and French doors to the garden. The decorative features of note include the Adam style ceiling decoration of moulding and cornice with fine marble chimneypiece. The dining room is of similar proportions and has a fine chimneypiece, as well as a trio of sash windows facing east. There is a door to the kitchen/breakfast room and a door to the study, which ensure the appropriate flow of accommodation. The south front of the house contains the library/sitting room and study, both benefitting from a double aspect. The library is arranged as a sitting room with extensive bookshelves to all sides and a marble chimneypiece with open fire. A glazed door provides access to the garden through the earlier William and Mary front entrance and a door leads to the study. The study overlooks the park and the drive, whilst being ideally placed for access to the library/sitting room and the dining room. The comfortable kitchen/breakfast room is ideal for modern family life and incorporates a large bay window with three floor to ceiling windows and French doors to the garden. Hand built cabinets incorporate cupboards, drawers and appliances with the large Aga (electric) sitting beneath a tall canopy. The handmade tiles were made locally and compliment the granite work surfaces and tiled floor. On the first floor an elegant skylight provides natural light to the landing and stairs. The principal bedroom is above the drawing room with a westerly aspect and incorporates fitted wardrobes designed by Ashley Hicks flanking the fireplace, a dressing room and bathroom with roll top bath and separate shower. The second floor provides two bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms plus a further four bedrooms and a family bathroom. As well as being beautiful, Chalcot House is enjoyable. The rooms differ, but each one is rewarding, perhaps due to its elegance or its intimacy, its views or its antiquity. The CottageThe cottage is well appointed and situated to the north of the house. The ring-fenced estate comprises of just under 1,000 acres of rolling chalk downland in the middle of which sits Buckholt House. Buckholt House was built by the current owners, tastefully designed in harmony with the surrounding landscape in a traditional style. The house has 12,000 sq ft of modern living accommodation, with a number of period features helping it to sit well within its surroundings. There are three farm cottages together with a beautifully appointed 9 bedroom guest house for shoot guests with an adjoining staff flat. The house has fabulous views across the estate to the South and beyond to the New Forest and the Isle of Wight. On a clear day from the highest point on the estate you can see five counties as well as the Isle of Wight. The pasture is farmed in hand with a herd of rare breed White Park cattle. The arable is contract farmed and the modern farm buildings provide ample storage and handling facilities for the farming business. The landscape lends itself to shooting and the Buckholt shoot is well renowned and will be hosting 28 days in the 2023/2024 season. Historically Buckholt formed part of a royal forest, adjoining the north-east corner of the New Forest. Its name arose because the bowl that comprises most of the land at Buckholt was not traditionally hunted over and was a place of sanctuary for deer, the Buck's Holt. Owned by the Baring family, the estate formed part of the Norman Court Estate in the 1870's and during this period the former Buckholt House was built as the Dower House. In the late 19th Century the property was sold to the Singer Family. The house and a small acreage of the farm were tenanted by the artist Lionel Edwards from the 1920's until he purchased it when the estate was sold and split up in the 50's. Whilst in their tenure, the current owners have been able to restore the holding to it's original size and improve it both residentially and agriculturally.Buckholt HouseBuckholt House was built in 2011 and covers some 12,000 square feet of modern living accommodation. There are a range of secondary farm buildings which may have potential for alternative use as per the above illustration. This would be subject to securing the necessary planning consents. The Farm: The rolling landscape that makes up Buckholt Estate provides a wonderful mix of sporting interest and farming potential. The arable land is contract farmed under a traditional arable rotation most recently including spring barley, winter wheat and oats. The estate also maintains a suckler herd of rare White Park cattle which graze the downland as well as the pasture surrounding the house and buildings. The farm is entered into an Entry Level plus Higher Level Stewardship agreement which terminates in 2027. The Shoot: The shoot at Buckholt is a highly regarded private and commercial shoot with a wonderful combination of pheasant, partridge and mixed drives; the signature drives being Round Hat, Rifle Range, Bullock's Hole and Clockwork which offer a high number of challenging birds. The shoot is run over the entire estate and while there will be 28 days in the 23/24 season, the current owners have hosted many more days in the recent past. Guests are able to spend the night in Buckholt Stables and enjoy shoot lunches and dinners in Buckholt House, or weather permitting in a marquee on The Downs, giving spectacular views over the surrounding countryside.LocationThe estate is positioned between the villages of Broughton, Middle Winterslow and West Tytherley on the Hampshire/ Wiltshire border.
